Whisking Up the Feelings

The Windmill is the key asana in the Yoga for Grief Relief sadhana and gives you access to the most powerful resource you can tap into. Although it is not found in classical yoga texts, it relates to a similar exercise included in Bioenergetics, a technique invented by American physician and psychotherapist Alexander Lowen (1994). I felt inspired to design the Windmill exercise and integrate it into my grief therapy practice because of the profound effect it had on me. As a somatic psychotherapist, I was absolutely fascinated by the immediate effect of how quickly whirling arm movements enhance the perception of feelings. In addition, I learned that in traditional Chinese medicine, some rotational movements of the arms are often prescribed to deal with symptoms of grief pinpointed in the lungs.

Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, a dear friend and one of the modern scholars of Yoga in India, provided me with a Sanskrit name for the technique: vayu chakram asana, or “wheel of air.” Through many years of using this technique, I have come to realize that the effectiveness of the Windmill is absolutely due to the intentionally direct contact with anahata chakra, the heart center, where attachment is developed.
